Solid state lighting is a rapidly growing field and is set to take over from conventional lighting sources. White LEDs form an integral part of solid state lighting as they can be used for illumination as well as for communication. One of the key challenges is to be able to communicate in the MHz range using a white LED. However as coverage area increases, the no. of parallel connections also increases and hence MIMO techniques are potentially attarcative options. This paper investigates the different optical wireless communication namely the imaging and non-imaging modes of operation.
